Earthjustice is the premier non-profit public interest environmental law organization. Earthjustice uses the power of law to protect people’s health, preserve our magnificent places and wildlife, advance clean energy, and combat climate change.

Their slogan, “Earthjustice: because the earth needs a good lawyer.”

Earthjustice has over 140 full time lawyers, 15 offices, and 661 active legal battles. Its success rate against the Trump Administration’s actions is 83 percent.

Sam Sankar, Senior Vice President of Programs, and Moneen Nasmith, Staff Attorney, will provide an overview of Earthjustice’s work and mission, including a discussion of key cases.

Optional lunch following the event at Felice – 15 Gold Street. Felice offers a three-course Prix Fixe Lunch for $29. The menu is inspired by rustic Tuscan cuisine and includes Italian classics made with the freshest produce available by sourcing from and partnering with local farms to obtain the most flavorful seasonal ingredients. Sam Sankar

Senior Vice President of Program at Earthjustice

As Senior Vice President, Sam is responsible for developing and overseeing the overall strategy and effectiveness of programs and coordinating the work of the Litigation, Communication, and Policy and Legislation departments. Sam has an extensive background in environmental issues. Previous positions include the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, a senior executive at General Electric, and Deputy Chief Counsel of the Presidential Commission formed to investigate the Deep Water Horizon oil spill.

Sam received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Cornell, an M.S. from Stanford, and a law degree from UC Berkeley. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

Moneen Nasmith

Staff Attorney at Earthjustice

As a staff attorney in Earthjustice’s northeast regional office, Moneen’s work focuses primarily on matters relating to the environmental and health impacts of oil and gas development. She has represented community and environmental groups in a variety of matters, including proposals for underground natural gas storage in New York, crude-by-rail terminals, and liquefied natural gas export facilities.

Moneen received her B.A. in Political Science from McGill University in 2002 and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2005. Following law school, she worked for more than four years in the Environment and Litigation departments of a law firm in Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining Earthjustice, she worked as a Fellow for the Rainforest Foundation and for the Columbia Center for Climate Change Law, while obtaining a Masters in Environment Policy at Columbia University.
